Chapter 22

Lia had just sat down to knit during a quiet period when her phone rang. It was Beth Daniels, the neighbor of Candace Carr.

“Hello, Beth,” Lia said. “Questions about the sweater?”

“I haven’t stopped thinking about it,” Beth said, laughing. “No final decision yet, but I wondered about picking out the yarn. How do we go about it?”

“Well, first you’ll have to decide on the pattern. That will come with recommendations for the kind of yarn. If alpaca yarn works, there’s a wonderful place, the Weber Alpaca Farm, that processes its own yarns, and we could go together to pick out the color you like. For other types of yarns, there is a lovely shop in Crandalsburg that carries those.”

“You’d be willing to come with me for that?”

“Certainly! It’s my second-most favorite thing to do,” Lia assured her. “After knitting.”

“That’s great to know.”

Hearing lingering hesitation in Beth’s voice, Lia said, “I know it’s an investment. But the cardigan patterns you were interested in will be in style for a long time. You’d wear yours and love it for years.”

“I’m sure you’re right,” Beth said. “I think Candace has had hers for some time. Not that it’s a splurge for her, I’m sure,” she added. “Her wardrobe in general looks to be pretty high-end. Well, I’d better go. I’ll think about this a little more and get back to you, okay?”

“Sure. I’m glad you called.” They disconnected, and Lia pocketed her phone. She resumed her knitting until a few browsers showed up. That ended with a single sale, coincidentally of a headband, similar to what she’d just been working on.

She had just completed that sale when Lia had her second surprise of the day. Heidi Sprouse had come to the craft fair and was making slow progress through it. She apparently had something to say to nearly every vendor along the way, reminding Lia of her first appearance among them on that fateful day of the reenactment. This time, Lia was sure Heidi heard multiple expressions of sympathy, which she appeared to accept graciously before she turned to the craft items at hand.

When she made it to Olivia’s both, Heidi oohed and aahed over Olivia’s scented soaps and bought a pack of three. Then she turned with a smile to Lia, who had set aside her knitting to step up to her counter.

“Hello again!” Lia said.

“I was hoping you’d be here,” Heidi said as she came closer. “I wanted to let you know I spoke to the police about having noticed Jack around the reenactment tents looking extremely pale. I told them I was sure he was coming down with a migraine.”

“Thank you for that.”

“I don’t know that it helped any, but at least it’s on the record as a bit of backup for Jack. You mentioned you were trying to help him out. Any progress?”

“Some.” Lia hesitated. “Do you mind me talking about it?”

Heidi waved a hand dismissively. “Please, don’t concern yourself. I’ve heard the worst already from the police. What I care about is having this murder solved.
